If you’re looking for a non-invasive, natural and gradual way to reverse the signs of aging, volume loss, and collagen loss, then poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra® Aesthetic) may be the treatment for you. Over time, our body produces less collagen, leading to volume loss and loss of elasticity of our skin. Poly-L-lactic acid helps to increase collagen production to reverse these effects of aging.

Volume loss in the face can lead to deep creases, hollowed temples and cheeks, or sagging jowls. When strategically injected into specific areas of the face poly-L-lactic acid can restore volume to the face creating fullness and restoring desired contours gradually over a period of several months by promoting our own body’s collagen production. And the results can last up to two years or more in selected patients.

Poly-L-lactic acid is different from usual dermal fillers such as Juvederm@, Radiesse@ and Restylane@. It provides results over time. Other dermal fillers provide more instant results but also do not last as long. In addition to lasting longer, in the case of extensive volume loss, treatment with sculptra can achieve a much more natural looking result than filling an area with several vials of traditional tissue filler. This is because poly-L-lactic acid works by inducing and promoting the body’s own natural collagen production as opposed to using a filling material. Treatments with traditional fillers and Sculptra can be combined in different areas of the face to achieve great results.

Poly-L-lactic acid is a synthetic biocompatible substance approved by Health Canada and the FDA. It has been used for decades with an excellent safety profile, so no allergy tests are required. It is a great way of achieving a natural look without looking as though you have had facial fillers. This treatment promotes the body’s own natural collagen production.

During your consultation Dr. Javidnia will help you decide if this is the best treatment for your facial volume loss. Using her extensive knowledge of facial anatomy, she can determine the best placement and dosage of treatment to provide you with your desired outcome.

Three treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart are usually necessary to achieve the best results. It is recommend to maintain your beautiful new facial volume with one treatment approximately once per year.

We ensure that your treatment is very comfortable by using topical anesthetic. As well, the formulation of the injection includes local anesthetic/freezing solution helping to numb the injection area for maximal comfort.

Down time after treatment?

Usually treatment involves minimal to no down time. As with all injectable treatments some minor swelling and bruising can occur for a few days following treatment. Using ice immediately after the treatment and for the first 24 hours helps to minimize any bruising and swelling. Makeup can be used to camouflage minor bruising.

Although there will be some initial improvement of facial volume immediately after injections, this is usually swelling and will only last for a few days. Longer-term improvement will begin over 4-6 weeks and continues for several months after the final treatment session.
